Researchers from South Asia face significant challenges in contributing to global health research. At IHHN, we are committed to advancing impactful health research and driving innovation across various disciplines.

The stark disparity in research capacity between high-income and low- to middle-income countries underscores the urgent need for greater investment in regions like Pakistan, where medical universities play a vital role in advancing health research.

The Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) at IHHN is central to fostering groundbreaking research and addressing healthcare disparities. Through innovation and collaboration, we strive to bridge gaps and make meaningful contributions to the global health research landscape.

Our three-year Research Strategic Plan, developed by the Scientific Research Committee (SRC), reflects our commitment to embedding research at the core of IHHN’s mission. The SRC has been pivotal in cultivating a research-driven culture, promoting evidence-based practices, and transforming IHHN into a hub for medical research and innovation.

Researchers from South Asia only contribute about 1.2% to annual health research. At Indus, we support and lead cutting-edge health research and development across all disciplines.

The WHO Global Observatory on Health Research and Development shows that there are 73 times more health researchers in high-income countries than low- and middle-income countries. In Pakistan, medical universities remain the major source of research for health in Pakistan, and the country only has about 25 full time equivalent public health researchers per million populations. Moreover, it has been found that the total spending on health research between 2013-2018 was US$ 1.68 million, which is about 0.000003% of Pakistan’s GDP. Comparatively, the health research funding in India was 0.09% of its GDP; in Qatar it was 0.47% and; in United Arab Emirates it was 0.49%. IHHN’s Indus Hospital Research Center (IHRC), has been an essential hub for research activities.

By empowering our team to contribute to advancements in patient care, we aim to create lasting, impactful change in healthcare, both locally and globally.
