Introduction

Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) and Indus University of Health Sciences (IUHS) are dedicated to promoting research to push the boundaries of medical knowledge and best practice in healthcare. To take the mission forward, Muzammil Paracha Research Endowment Fund has been initiated. Through this, the Indus Seed Fund Grant has been established to support innovative ideas and early-stage research with the potential to impact clinical practice and patient outcomes. This will promote a culture of research enquiry and encourage collaborative thinking. IHHN and IUHS also aim to strengthen inclusive research by inviting all its patients, thereby ensuring that all socioeconomic backgrounds are represented in the global research dialogue.

The grant is competitive and only open to IHHN employees. It will support interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside Indus Hospital and Health Network. Pilot data or proof-of-concept studies will be prioritized to enable external funding opportunities. It is expected that research teams will include students, residents, junior, and early-stage researchers. Projects may leverage data from existing clinical and educational programs within IHHN, with the ultimate aim of contextualizing research for local populations.

What are the goals for the grant?

The Seed Fund Program will prioritize interdisciplinary collaboration, support the generation of pilot data, and conduct proof-of-concept studies. This is to strengthen applications for external funding, promote the involvement of students, residents, junior, and early-stage researchers. This, in turn, will leverage data from prominent existing clinical and educational programs, ensuring that research is contextualized for local populations.

How will grant proposals be evaluated?

Focus
Key Actions
Screening
Exclude ineligible applications based on form completion, AI assistance, and employment tenure at Indus
ORIC Review
Applications reviewed based on PI profile and project novelty, impact, feasibility, and sustainability. Top 10 advance
Panel Interview & Presentation
Evaluate methodology, budget, viability, communication, leadership, and collaboration
SME Review
Assess novelty, impact, sustainability, feasibility, and resources
Final Ranking
Scores combined, top 2 awarded Seed Fund Grants

First, applications will be screened to exclude incomplete submissions and to assess AI assistance, focusing on the novelty of the research idea, its potential impact, project and budget feasibility, and long-term sustainability. Then, ORIC will review applications from which only the top 10 will advance. The next stage will involve a panel interview and in-person presentation, where candidates will be evaluated on their methodological understanding, budget management, financial viability, communication skills, leadership, and collaboration. Following this, a Subject Matter Expert will review projects, considering their novelty, impact, sustainability, feasibility, and resource requirements. Final scores from Stage Two will be ranked, and the top two applicants will be awarded the Seed Fund Grants.
