Back from the Brink: Rafiq’s Miraculous Recovery from the Congo Virus

Mohammad Rafiq, a livestock caretaker from Latifabad, Hyderabad, lived a simple life with his wife and children. One day in late February, several of his cattle developed a mysterious fever. They recovered quickly, and Rafiq thought little of it—returning to his daily routine.

A few weeks later, Rafiq began feeling unusually sluggish and lost his appetite. Assuming it was a minor stomach issue, he ignored his family’s pleas to see a doctor, citing financial constraints. But his condition worsened rapidly. One morning, he collapsed in the bathroom, bleeding from his mouth and extremities.“There was blood everywhere,” he recalled. “My family stared at me like I was a ghost. They were terrified—I looked like I was about to die.”

Rafiq was rushed to the local Civil Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. His condition stabilized—until a colonoscopy worsened it drastically. With his platelet count dropping and his body deteriorating, he was transferred to a private hospital for further tests.

There, doctors suspected something even more severe. A test confirmed their fears: Rafiq had contracted the Congo Virus, a highly contagious and often deadly disease. However, the hospital lacked the isolation and ICU facilities needed for such a critical case and referred him elsewhere.

By the time Rafiq reached Indus Hospital & Health Network’s Korangi Campus, he was in the final stages of the virus. He was rated 10 out of 10 on a severity scale. The odds of survival were almost nonexistent.

Yet the team at Indus refused to give up.

Doctors began immediate, aggressive treatment—not only for Rafiq but also for his family, who were at risk due to the virus’s contagious nature. With careful isolation, advanced care, and unrelenting commitment, Rafiq’s condition started to improve. Against all odds, just five days later, he was cleared of the virus and discharged.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Rafiq wept as he expressed his gratitude.“The last few weeks passed like a bad dream, but I’m so thankful to the doctors at Indus. They saved my life when everyone else had lost hope. They brought me back from the edge of death.”

Today, Rafiq is healthy again—reunited with his family and grateful for every breath. His story is a testament to the unwavering dedication of Indus Hospital’s medical team, who continue to save lives, no matter how impossible the situation may seem.
