Yellow Hand Initiative: Dr. Arif Ali Arain awarded the Monique Ackermann Prize, Recognition for strengthening safety in oncology pharmacy at Indus Hospital & Health Network

Indus Hospital & Health Network is proud to announce that Dr. Arif Ali Arain, Head of Pharmacy Services, has been honored with the Monique Ackermann Award by the European Society of Oncology Pharmacy (ESOP) for his leadership in implementing the Yellow Hand initiative in Pakistan.

Introduced by ESOP in 2008, the Yellow Hand symbol promotes safe handling of CMR drugs — medicines that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction. Through adoption of international QuapoS standards, Dr. Arain and his team have strengthened protection for healthcare workers, patients and the environment across IHHN oncology services.

Key safety measures implemented under the Yellow Hand standard:

Secured, sealed and leak-proof delivery of CMR drugs.

Separate, clearly labelled transport containers and routes for CMR products.

Visible warning labels with safe-handling instructions and restrictions for pregnant or breastfeeding staff.

Supplier-level precautions to prevent breakage and contamination.

The Monique Ackermann Award recognises institutions and professionals who not only adopt the Yellow Hand symbol but also document and integrate it into everyday practice — setting a replicable example for others internationally. This accolade highlights IHHN’s ongoing commitment to quality, patient safety and pharmacy excellence.
