IHHN’s Emergency Medicine Leadership Course Empowers Healthcare Professionals

Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) hosted the second edition of the Emergency Medicine Leadership Course from November 6th to 10th, 2023, at Avari Towers, Karachi. Meticulously designed by esteemed course directors Dr. Syed Ghazanfar Saleem and Dr. Saima Ali from IHHN, and Dr. Megan Rybarczyk from the University of Pennsylvania, this five-day course aimed to equip physicians, nurses, and administrators with the skills to assume leadership roles in their respective emergency departments. Each day of the program provided layers of expertise and real-world perspectives, equipping participants with a comprehensive toolkit for leadership in emergency medicine.

The course featured a distinguished lineup of community leaders, including Dr. Munawwar Khursheed from NICVD; Dr. Azer Shaikh from SMBB Trauma Center; Dr. Ahson Rabbani and Mr. Shazad Farooq from Childlife Foundation; Dr. Shahan Waheed from AKUH; Dr. Ali Kashan from SRMS; and Mr. Tariq Aziz, Dr. Saba Laila Aslam, Dr. Lubna Mushtaq, Dr. Adeel Khatri, Dr. Sama Mukhtar, Mr. Fawad Rashid, and Dr. Rabia Bega from IHHN.

Over the five days, participants immersed themselves in the various multifaceted aspects of leadership. Day 1 provided a comprehensive overview of the Emergency Department (ED) offering valuable insights into the intricate workings of Eds.  Attendees gained practical knowledge by exploring resource optimization, staffing models, and the delicate balance between adequacy and excess. The program seamlessly transitioned into discussions on triage models, addressing the crucial question of prioritization – ‘Who Gets to Go In First?’. This was followed by an exploration of ED crowding and boarding, where strategies for managing the rush hour were thoroughly examined.

Day 2 continued the exploration, focusing on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Media. The highlight was a dynamic disaster simulation which pushed teams to strategically harness their strengths. Participants were challenged to employ EMS and Media strategies effectively, providing hands-on experience in crisis management and decision-making in real-time scenarios. 

Day 3 commenced with an in-depth focus on risk analysis guiding participants through the complexities of navigating potential challenges. This was complemented by an exploration of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), providing essential tools for maintaining efficiency and effectiveness in emergency department operations. The day concluded with a forward-looking perspective on Tele-EM and a field visit to ChildLife Foundation’s Tele EM services, offering a firsthand glimpse into innovative approaches.

On day 4, participants delved into the intricacies of using ED Data honing their skills in extracting meaningful insights from the information available. They also explored negotiation and conflict resolution in the ED’ – skills which empower leaders with effective strategies for fostering collaboration and resolving disputes. The day concluded with a spotlight on ED education providing participants with the tools and knowledge needed to contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of educational initiatives within emergency departments.

Participants were engaged throughout the course with the ‘Middle Earth’ hypothetical data, complemented by an e-learning platform in which they were enrolled prior to the event. The interactive nature of the program encouraged participants to create and present small presentations each day, receiving valuable asymmetric critiques from facilitators and their peers to enhance their soft skills. The event provided a unique opportunity for professionals to enhance their leadership capabilities and network with experts in the field, fostering a community dedicated to advancing emergency medicine in Pakistan.

On the last day of the course, participants took a deep dive into the critical aspects of ED management including budgeting – providing essential insights into financial management – and effective leadership strategies tailored for emergency department settings. This was followed by the ‘Final Group Presentations,’ where each team had a 15-minute slot for their presentation, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. The winning team was announced after careful scoring based on their performance, acknowledging their exemplary contributions to the program.

Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, President of Indus Hospital & Health Network, emphasized the significance of the gained knowledge and collaborative efforts made throughout the course in his closing remarks. The event concluded with a certificate ceremony, recognizing each participant’s commitment to excellence in emergency healthcare leadership.

The Emergency Medicine Leadership Course by IHHN is a prime example of the collaborative effort, dedication, and expertise, needed to shape the future leaders of emergency medicine and foster a community dedicated to advancing healthcare in Pakistan.
