Indus Hospital & Health Network Recognized Globally for Free Diabetes Care by IDF President

The President of the International Diabetes Federation, Prof Peter Schwarz, visited the Indus Hospital & Health Network and highlighted the urgent need to address Pakistan’s escalating diabetes crisis. With over 34.5 million people living with diabetes, Pakistan currently has the highest prevalence rate in the world.

During his visit to Indus Hospital, Karachi, Prof Schwarz praised the institution as a model of free, quality healthcare. “This is one of the best healthcare models I have seen anywhere in the world. They provide primary, secondary, and tertiary care under one roof, and all services are free through donations. This is a model with a big future worldwide,” he remarked.

Prof Schwarz is currently in Pakistan to train diabetologists under a specialized program. While addressing participants, he stressed the importance of adopting healthier eating habits and incorporating regular physical activity into daily routines.

“Pakistan is at the epicenter of a worsening diabetes crisis. Unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity are the major drivers of this alarming trend,” he warned.

He emphasized that prevention, early screening, and public awareness are essential to reducing the rising burden of diabetes in the country. He further suggested practical lifestyle changes, including healthier cooking methods and increasing physical activity.

Prof Schwarz also acknowledged the outstanding contribution of Prof Abdul Basit, a leading Pakistani diabetologist affiliated with IHHN, who has trained hundreds of general practitioners in diabetes management across the country. “Prof Basit’s leadership in diabetes care and training has influenced thousands globally,” he noted.
