Finding His Voice: Hamid’s Journey from Silence to Sound

Hamid’s journey began at just two years old when his parents, desperate for a solution, turned to Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) in search of hope for their son. Little did they know that within the walls of this compassionate institution, Hamid’s world was about to transform in ways they could never have imagined.

Hamid was diagnosed with a condition called Microtia, where the outer structure of his ears was deformed, rendering him unable to hear. His life had been confined to a silent existence, as he had never learned to speak and remained mute. His parents had exhausted all avenues, visiting multiple hospitals only to be turned away due to the overwhelming costs of treatment. But, guided by the recommendation of a dear friend, they arrived at Indus Hospital in Korangi, clinging to a glimmer of hope.

At Indus Hospital, Hamid’s journey to reclaim his voice commenced. While he was still too young for surgery, the dedicated staff devised a solution. They fitted him with a bone-conducting hearing aid, delicately placed across his head, bridging the gap of his hearing loss. The process of teaching him how to speak began in earnest, with several Hanen-certified speech therapists at IHHN leading the charge.

Hamid’s therapy was a comprehensive approach encompassing various therapeutic techniques and thematic language stimulations. The compassionate therapists started from scratch, teaching him everything from basic sounds to the intricacies of the alphabet. With unwavering dedication, Hamid progressed from single words to complete sentences, now attending a regular school. Later, the doctors at IHHN upgraded his hearing aids to body-worn devices, discreetly fitted into his ears like earphones. 

Today, Hamid continues to visit Indus Hospital every six months for follow-up appointments, eager to meet the staff who forever changed his life. In a world that was once as silent as the grave, they brought sound and excitement, molding him into a vibrant young boy with a voice that echoes with laughter and joy.
