Kaleem’s Comeback: Surviving a Deadly Blast with Indus’ Lifesaving Care

Kaleem Ullah was 15 years old when he sustained a terrible blunt trauma injury to his chest, in an accidental blast at the gas station he was working on.

He was struck with a large cylinder on the upper abdomen and chest, and immediately passed out. Due to being completely unresponsive he was rushed to the Emergency room of the RTEH hospital branch of IHHN in Muzaffargarh, and Treatment was started immediately. His parents were informed by his peers on the gas station after he was brought in.

After immediate Emergency response was completed and Kaleem became stable, the doctors ordered a CT scan to gauge the status of his internal organs. In the results, a fracture in his ribs, a pericardial effusion in his heart, and a stage 3 liver laceration were discovered. During this time, a cardiac tamponade was also confirmed by an echocardiogram and as he was prepped for an operation, Kaleem’s condition began to worsen.

He developed neck vein distention, and his vitals became steadily less stable, so much so that Surgery had to be conducted immediately by a general surgeon present in the ER. An extremely complicated Surgery was done on Kaleem’s chest, with multiple difficult, expert, incisions and Kaleem’s heart was slowly stabilized by the perseverance and determination of the ER team. Kaleem did not need to be placed on the ventilator and was recovering well from the anesthesia administered to him during his surgery.

His liver Injury was also managed after he was completely stable and his recovery began under the watchful eye of the Hospital Staff. On the sixth day after his surgery, Kaleem was discharged without any further complications and placed in physiotherapy for his chest.

He visited Indus Hospital for a few follow up sessions, during which no complications were observed. His parents say “When the accident happened we lost hope of our child’s life but when we reached Indus Hospital and the Doctors, Nurses and other staff seeing the sincere efforts, it seemed that Allah has given us a hospital like Indus Hospital in our area as a blessing.”

Now Kaleem Ullah is fully recovered and moving towards a stronger life. While thanking Indus hospital, he says that he is grateful to Indus Hospital who’s tireless and professional efforts of his staff have brought him back to a healthy life today. His treatment follows the SDG’s outlined by WHO for a brighter future, and particularly is part of SDG 3- Good health and wellbeing, showing that even after being discharged his health was not allowed to be compromised and he received regular check up’s.
