MIKD Celebrates a Major Milestone: 100 Free Renal Transplants Completed

The Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases (MIKD), managed by the Indus Hospital & Health Network, has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully completing its 100th free-of-cost renal transplant. This major accomplishment reflects MIKD’s strong commitment to delivering compassionate and high-quality kidney care to underserved communities in South Punjab. Since its first transplant on August 3, 2021, MIKD has been steadily growing as a center of excellence for renal care. The 100th transplant was successfully completed on April 8, 2025, and was celebrated by the dedicated transplant team and hospital leadership.

All transplants at MIKD are performed entirely free of cost, with full financial support from the Government of Punjab. On average, MIKD performs 20 renal transplants each year. The transplant process is carefully designed, following a five-step workup that includes advanced diagnostics, donor and recipient screenings, and approval by the Transplant Evaluation Committee. This ensures each case is handled ethically and safely, in line with Punjab Human Organ Transplant Authority (P-HOTA) guidelines.

This success has been made possible by a skilled and committed multidisciplinary team. The transplant surgeons include Dr. M. Salman Arshad, Dr. Ali Imran Zaidi, Dr. Nouman Masood, and Dr. Ayyaz Bilal. Other key members include nephrologist Dr. Nayyar Saleem, anaesthetist Dr. Hassan Raza, pulmonologist Dr. Aneel Razzaq, general physician Dr. Sheraz Hassan Bhutta, general surgeon Dr. Irfan Javed, radiologist Dr. Wajahat Ali, and transplant coordinator Mr. Ahsan Anwar. Local support was also provided by Mr. Khawaja Riaz and Mr. M. Irfan Wyne. Their teamwork ensures a safe and successful transplant journey for every patient.

MIKD’s advanced infrastructure supports this program with four operation theatres, two of them being modular dedicated ICU and HDU units with 13 beds, a 24/7 emergency room with dialysis machines, and fully functional departments including pathology, radiology, pharmacy, blood bank, CSSD, dialysis, physiotherapy, nutritional support, and biomedical engineering. A trained team of nurses and consultants is also available round-the-clock.

Among the many lives changed by this program, the story of Muhammad Naeem stands out. A 53-year-old patient from Multan, he spent years relying on a wheelchair and dialysis. With MIKD’s support, he lost weight, completed his transplant workup, and received a kidney from his wife on October 4, 2024. Six months later, Naeem is now walking again and running a small drink corner to support his family. His story shows how access to quality healthcare can restore dignity, mobility, and livelihood.

Post-transplant care at MIKD is just as important as the surgery itself. Patients receive regular checkups, medication support, and follow-up visits for one year. After that, they are enrolled in the hospital’s “Adopt a Patient” program, which ensures continued support for those in need, without any financial burden.

The renal transplant program at MIKD is not just a medical service it’s a lifeline for the people of South Punjab. It gives patients freedom from dialysis, improves survival, and helps them return to a normal life. Children are going back to school, adults are returning to work, and families are rebuilding with hope. With this achievement, MIKD continues to transform lives and communities through free, ethical, and high-quality renal care in Pakistan.
