IHHN Researchers Publish Study on Rare Form of Tuberculosis in International Journal

Researchers from Indus Hospital & Health Network have published an important clinical research article in a US-based international journal, highlighting the diagnostic challenges associated with tuberculous mastitis, a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis commonly seen in TB-endemic regions.

The article, titled “Clinically Challenging Tuberculous Mastitis from an Endemic Area: A Retrospective Case Series,” was authored by Dr. Aqsa Jawaid Siddiqui, Dr. Aamir Sikandar Kazi, Dr. Ghina Shamim Shamsi and colleagues. The study was published online on April 2, 2026, in touchREVIEWS in Infectious Diseases.

The retrospective case series explored the clinical and diagnostic complexities of tuberculous mastitis, an uncommon but clinically significant condition that often mimics other breast diseases such as pyogenic abscesses and breast malignancies. The authors noted that these overlapping presentations can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment challenges in routine clinical practice.

The study emphasized the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for tuberculosis in patients presenting with atypical or non-healing breast lesions, particularly in tuberculosis-endemic settings. It also highlighted the critical role of multidisciplinary evaluation, radiological imaging, microbiological investigations, and histopathological confirmation in achieving an accurate diagnosis.
