From Doubt to Trust: How Laghara Village Embraced Vaccination

In the remote village of Laghara, Union Council Wah Hasankhail, District Musakhel, Balochistan—located about 52 kilometers from the district headquarters—around 400 residents, mostly dependent on agriculture and livestock, faced immense challenges in accessing basic healthcare services. The community, largely illiterate and isolated, had little awareness about government health initiatives, especially immunization drives. Over time, misinformation and myths took root, leading to strong resistance toward vaccination. Many villagers believed vaccines could cause infertility or serious side effects, deepening mistrust within the community.

To address this critical issue, Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), with the support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Oxford Policy Management (OPM), Mannion Daniels, and the Government of Balochistan, initiated a focused community mobilization campaign. The IHHN field team conducted several visits to Laghara, engaging directly with village elders, religious leaders, and other influential community members. In the beginning, the villagers were hesitant and skeptical, but the mobilizers continued to engage them through respectful dialogue, open discussions, and clear explanations about the safety and importance of vaccines.

Gradually, trust began to build. The elders, once uncertain, started to understand the value of vaccination and encouraged others to listen to the health teams. Their endorsement proved to be a turning point. When the next immunization campaign was launched, the community mobilizer referred five children for vaccination—marking a significant milestone for a village that had previously refused all vaccines. This initial breakthrough became a symbol of change for the entire community.

With every visit, the trust between the mobilization team and the villagers grew stronger. What once began as doubt and resistance transformed into cooperation and confidence. Today, the people of Laghara stand as an inspiring example of how persistence, patience, and community engagement can overcome fear and misinformation. Thanks to teamwork and truthful communication, Laghara’s children are now protected—shielded by the life-saving power of vaccination.
