Indus Hospital Pioneers Cochlear Implant Surgery at Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi

Indus Hospital, in collaboration with the Sindh Government, has successfully performed the first-ever cochlear implant surgery at Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences. This milestone marks a significant advancement in audiology and hearing care, laying the foundation for a comprehensive cochlear implant program at the hospital.

The groundbreaking procedure was conducted under the expert leadership of Dr. Asif Arain, Head of ENT at Indus Hospital, along with his dedicated team, including Dr. Shakeel Akhtar, Dr. Agha Aftab and Dr. Huzaifa. This life-changing surgery, performed on a 4-year-old child at the OT Complex of Civil Hospital Karachi, was made possible with the cochlear implant provided by the Government of Sindh.

Dr. Asif Arain emphasized Indus Hospital’s leading role in mentoring and expanding cochlear implant surgeries across Pakistan. “At Indus Hospital, we are committed to capacity building, mentorship, and training. We have successfully led cochlear implant programs at Liaquat National Hospital, Patel Hospital, Shifa International Hospital Islamabad, and now, Civil Hospital Karachi. Our vision extends beyond individual surgeries—we are dedicated to strengthening audiology, speech, and language pathology departments nationwide,” he stated.

This milestone was achieved through the collaboration of Indus Hospital and Civil Hospital Karachi’s leadership, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Saeed Quraishy (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz), Professor Dr. Sadaf Zia, Professor Dr. Zeba Ahmed and their team, Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Khalid Bukhari. The multidisciplinary team, comprising Dr. Haroon Khan and Dr. Noweed Ahmed, played a pivotal role in launching the hospital’s cochlear implant program.
