Advancing Healthcare Excellence: Dr. Ashar Alam’s Research on Faculty Satisfaction

At Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), fostering a motivated and satisfied workforce is key to delivering high-quality, free healthcare. In pursuit of this mission, Dr. Ashar Alam, Medical Director at IHHN Karachi, has conducted a significant study in collaboration with Eaton Business School, assessing employee satisfaction among faculty members at a philanthropic tertiary-care hospital in Karachi.

Key Insights from the Research

The study, titled “Assessment of Employee Satisfaction by Measuring Herzberg’s Hygiene and Motivation Factors,” provides crucial insights into faculty motivation. Based on Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, the study distinguishes between Hygiene Factors which prevent dissatisfaction and Motivation Factors which drive engagement and performance.

A survey conducted among 137 faculty members (with 107 responses) revealed:

  • 67.1% of faculty members reported motivation, while 38.8% experienced dissatisfaction.
  • Salary, bureaucratic policies, and work conditions were identified as key dissatisfaction factors.
  • Professional growth opportunities and career advancement emerged as major drivers of satisfaction.
  • Motivation levels varied based on specialty, position, and experience, highlighting areas for improvement.
  • A 9% faculty turnover rate over the past year underscores the need for targeted faculty retention strategies.
