2nd Pakistan Diagnostic Interventional Nephrology (PK-DIN) POCUS Workshop: A Resounding Success at Indus Hospital Karachi

Indus Hospital Karachi successfully hosted the 2nd Pakistan Diagnostic Interventional Nephrology and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PK-DIN POCUS) Workshop on December 13-14, 2024. The workshop, a collaborative initiative by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the Pakistan Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology Academy, brought together healthcare professionals from across the country to advance medical education and practical skills in nephrology and ultrasound.

The workshop drew a diverse group of participants, including senior nephrology professors, assistant professors, pediatric consultants, postgraduate trainees from various specialties, dialysis technicians, and healthcare staff. The event was honored by the presence of Dr. Saeed Ahmed from the UK, who served as the course director. Dr. Ahmed, a consultant nephrologist with expertise in interventional nephrology at Sunderland, is renowned for establishing the UK’s first dedicated Interventional Nephrology Unit. He also chairs the UK Kidney Association’s specialist interest group and serves as an ISN Ambassador.

Dr. Ahmed was supported by a distinguished team of national and international mentors, including Dr. Azhar Waheed Khan (Consultant Nephrologist, UK), Dr. Naveed Sarwar (Consultant Nephrologist, Bahria Safari Hospital Rawalpindi), Dr. Haroon Ayub (Consultant Nephrologist, Indus Hospital Lahore), Dr. Pooran Kumar (Consultant Nephrologist, Liaquat Medical and Health Sciences, and Vice President of the Pakistan Society of Nephrology), Dr. Asif Mehdi (Consultant Nephrologist, Tabba Kidney Institute Karachi), Dr. Ayesha Ijaz (Consultant Nephrologist, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center), Dr. Waleed Bin Ghaffar (Anesthesiologist and Intensivist, Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi), Dr. Sajeer Bhoora (Consultant in Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine, Indus Hospital Karachi), and Dr. Komal Baloch (Consultant in Critical Care Medicine, Indus Hospital Karachi).

The two-day event commenced with an inaugural ceremony, followed by intensive hands-on training sessions and lectures delivered by renowned experts. Twenty-one students participated in an intensive hands-on training session, followed by a rigorous exam that pushed them to excel. This comprehensive training program was designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).

In addition Twenty-one delegates also attended the workshop, benefiting from informative lectures delivered by renowned experts in the field. The hands-on training sessions provided delegates with the opportunity to practice their POCUS skills under the guidance of experienced mentors.

The event concluded with a shield distribution ceremony, recognizing the invaluable contributions of the mentors and facilitators. Their dedication and expertise played a crucial role in ensuring the workshop’s success. This initiative reflects Indus Hospital Karachi’s unwavering commitment to advancing medical education and training.
