Government of Balochistan and IHHN

Public-Private Partnership

Indus Hospital & Health Network And The Government of Balochistan

Despite being the largest province of Pakistan by land area, Balochistan is the least populated. Due to its mountainous terrain and scarcity of water, many of the region’s inhabitants fall victim to earthquakes, infectious outbreaks, flash floods, and other such calamities.

Indus Hospital & Health Network has always been on the frontline in providing quality healthcare services to the underserved population of remote areas. Through a public-private partnership, IHHN has been working with the Balochistan Government to help serve the region and make universal healthcare a reality.

IHHN & Government of Balochistan Public-Private Partnership

In the health sector, Public-Private Partnerships are defined as institutional relationships between the government and the private sector to achieve a shared goal based on a mutually agreed division of labor and resources. They are supported by larger legal frameworks, institutional frameworks, and sustained political championing.

Achievements & Collaborations

With the assistance and funding provided through partnering with the Balochistan Government, IHHN has expanded its network throughout the province and has made significant steps toward achieving its goal of providing quality and free healthcare to all.

In April 2021, IHHN entered a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Balochistan for the initiation and management of the Pediatric Oncology Unit at the Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Quetta.

The total number of new patients registered in POU Quetta is 225. For the month of June 2022, 143 outpatients, 73 daycare patients, and 65 inpatients were recorded with 138 patients being discharged.

Over 200 patients have been referred to POU Quetta from IHHN’s Korangi Campus in Karachi. IHHN has also facilitated the treatment of patients from various other POUs in the private sector, by making referrals to Quetta. This has enormously served the patients from the region who no longer have to leave their homes and families for lengthy periods to avail free, quality healthcare.

Malaria is a grave public health problem that represents the fifth leading cause of death from infectious diseases worldwide. Pakistan, along with Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen is reported to account for more than 95% of the regional malaria burden.

IHHN is the private-sector principal recipient of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM) grant for Malaria intervention. In this, IHHN works with the Department of Health, Baluchistan, and particularly the Provincial Malaria Control Program

Indus Hospital Health Network is working for the eradication of Malaria in 34 high-endemic districts; this includes 21 districts in Baluchistan.

IHHN’s Malaria Program does not only aim to screen and treat Malaria; it is also committed to community engagement, prevention, and advocacy as essential components of Malaria Control.

The program has been effective in reducing the high burden of malaria on these vulnerable communities. A total of 101,279 cases of Malaria amongst males, females, and children were successfully treated in 2020 and this number rose to 194,766 in 2021.
