IHHN HELPS PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES TO PARTICIPATE TOWARD AN INCLUSIVE, ACCESSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE WORLD

Physically-disabled patients exhibited their empowerment with assertive devices on December 4, 2021, at The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
December 3 is observed as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) worldwide. The theme for IDPD this year was “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.” The day aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities and raise awareness of the persons with disabilities.
The event started with a walk from the TB Clinic to the Mariyam Bashir Dawood Courtyard. Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, Chief Executive Officer, Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), Dr. Amin Chinoy, Executive Director, Physical Rehabilitation Directorate, and patients participated in the walk. Dr. Mansoor Ali Khan, Chair, Surgical Services, was also present. Imran Latif Khan, Physical Rehabilitation Team Leader from the International Committee of the Red Cross, was the guest.
Dr. Bari spoke words of encouragement to the patients who had overcome all odds, who despite their disabilities, were excelling in their fields. The patients also shared their stories of how their lives had changed after receiving treatment at the Physical Rehabilitation Center.
At the end of the event, there was a gift and certificate distribution ceremony.
Indus Hospital & Health Network, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross and Chal Foundation, started a rehabilitation program at The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus in 2015 through a Physical Rehabilitation Center (PRC). IHHN is providing Physical therapy, Prosthetic and Orthotic devices, Psychological Therapy, and Speech and Audiology services through PRCs in Karachi, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, and Badin.
The Rehabilitation Department provides services and devices to all registered patients. These services are provided to upper and lower limb amputees, polio, cerebral palsy, and stroke patients, and children with congenital disabilities like cerebral palsy and clubfeet. More than 70% of patients completed their physiotherapy intervention and improved symptoms and quality of life.
During 2020-21, 20,878 patients registered at the PRCs, and 3,006 devices were provided.
