CPEM RECEIVES GEMA 2020 GLOBAL MEDICAL EDUCATION AWARD

The Certification Program in Emergency Medicine (CPEM), a collaborative endeavour of the Indus Health Network and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, has received the 2020 Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s (SAEM) Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) Global Emergency Medicine Education Award. CPEM was presented the award at the virtual SAEM annual meeting on Friday, May 15, 2020.

The award honours a team that has worked to create sustainable education solutions, develop robust educational curriculum or other projects that encourage the growth and development of emergency physicians internationally’.

CPEM is an innovative one-year training module inculcating emergency medical knowledge and skills in emergency physicians and conducted at the Indus Hospital, Karachi since July 2018. The program offers didactic and practical learning, supervised by local and international faculty and includes multiple educational innovations e.g. flipped classroom sessions, practical workshops, case-based discussions over a messaging application, and use of low-cost improvised models to hone procedural skills.

The first batch of trainees comprised of doctors from six of Karachi’s largest Emergency Departments (EDs). The first batch of 25 doctors completed the rigorous training and examination process in June 2019. A second batch is currently undergoing training. This program is supported by the Habib Bank Foundation and Harvard Medical School’s Center for Global Health Delivery, Dubai. For more information, please visit CPEM’s website: http://www.cpem.com.pk/
