Diabetes Awareness Beyond IHHN Walls
November 2023 was devoted to raising diabetes awareness throughout Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) in observance of World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2023. Several awareness activities were held outside of IHHN to empower the general community.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in Pakistan, diabetes prevalence stands at a concerning 26.7% among adults, affecting 1 in every 4 individuals, totaling 33 million in 2021. With 26.9% of adults remaining undiagnosed, the potential for complications is substantial. An additional 11 million adults in Pakistan face Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), elevating their risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The prevailing situation poses a great threat not only to our health system but also to our dwindling economy. As part of its commitment to address this national emergency, The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus is presently providing care for 1500 diabetic patients each month on average.
The awareness initiatives aimed to effectively combat the prevailing diabetes menace through lifestyle modifications and effective treatment strategies. The theme “Access to Diabetes Care” is a sustainable approach to preventing people from diabetes.
Bank Al-Habib Pvt Limited
On November 16, 2023, Dr. Saba Akhtar, Specialist, Diabetes Management Program, IHHN, led an impactful diabetes awareness session at Bank Al Habib Pvt Limited, showcasing a proactive approach to holistic health in the corporate environment. The session emphasized preventative strategies and effective diabetes management, extending awareness to highlight the symbiotic relationship between individual health and workplace productivity.
General Practitioners of Korangi:
On November 8, 2023, Dr. Sumerah Jabeen, Head of the Department for Diabetes & Endocrinology, IHHN, in collaboration with the Pakistan Endocrine Society and Searle Pharmaceuticals, facilitated a workshop on diabetes management for general practitioners in Korangi, emphasizing the significant impact of lifestyle choices on both prevention and management.
