Description
NICU STAY FOR SICK NEWBORN
The first 28 days of life – the neonatal period – is the most vulnerable time for a child’s survival. Children face the highest risk of dying in their first month of life at an average global rate of 17 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2019.
Pakistan has the 2nd highest infant mortality in the world- 42 deaths per 1,000 live births.
An NICU takes care of neonates that weigh less than 1800 grams or display a gestational maturity of fewer than 34 weeks. NICU offers more intensive care than a secondary care unit, and is for newborns who are critically ill, need equipment to help them breathe to stay alive, or who need surgery.
