World Diabetes Day 2023 – “Know your risk, Know Your Response”
adminNovember 2023 was devoted to raising diabetes awareness throughout Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) at all levels in observance of World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2023. Comprehensive Diabetes awareness initiatives were held across multiple IHHN campuses. The activities were an effort by the employees of IHHN to empower the health care professionals (HCPs) and community, in effectively combating the prevailing diabetes menace through lifestyle modifications and effective treatment strategies. The theme “Access to Diabetes Care” is a sustainable approach to preventing people from diabetes.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in Pakistan, diabetes prevalence stands at a concerning 26.7% among adults, affecting 1 in every 4 individuals, totaling 33 million in 2021. With 26.9% of adults remaining undiagnosed, the potential for complications is substantial. An additional 11 million adults in Pakistan face Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), elevating their risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The prevailing situation poses a great threat not only to our health system but also to our dwindling economy. As part of its commitment to address this national emergency, The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus is presently providing care for 1500 diabetic patients each month on average.
The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus:
- Continuing Medical Education (CME) session:
The Continuing Medical Education (CME) session titled “Breaking Ground in Diabetes Management” was held at Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus, on November 14, 2023, where experts from the field of Diabetes & Endocrine explored the latest management strategies in Diabetes Management. Dr. Sumerah Jabeen, Head of the Department for Diabetes & Endocrinology, led this educational session which promoted interdisciplinary learning. Dr. Hiba Ashraf, the Director, PCP, officially commenced the program with a welcome speech where she emphasized the importance of Diabetes awareness and education in these challenging times. Dr. Aisha Sheikh, Consultant Endocrinologist at AKUH and President-Elect of Pakistan Endocrine Society AKUH, highlighted the present-day role of SGLT2 inhibitors in diabetes care and beyond. Dr. Qamar Masood, Consultant Endocrinologist and Section Head at AKUH, facilitated a session on in-patient management of hyperglycemia, followed by Dr. Asma Ahmed, Consultant Endocrinologist, who delved into GLP-1 agonists, emphasizing its practical applications in diabetes care and its role as an anti-obesity drug. The event was concluded with the Q & A session followed by the presentation of shields and bouquets to the speakers.
- Diabetes Awareness Session:
On November 15, 2023, a collaborative initiative, integrating the Departments of Diabetes & Endocrinology, Diabetes Management Program-CHD, and Family Medicine, was held at The Indus Hospital, Korangi campus, to amplify diabetes awareness at the community level. The inaugural event featured welcoming remarks from Ms. Sehrish Sehar, Diabetes Management Program – DMP Coordinator, and a soul-soothing Qur’anic recitation by Qari Muhammad Noman Khan. Dr. Hiba Ashraf set the stage for purposeful dialogue, followed by insightful presentations from a trio of experts—Dr. Sumerah Jabeen, HOD Diabetes and Endocrine department; Dr. Ayesha Sarfaraz, Specialist, Family Medicine; and Dr. Saba Akhter, Specialist, DMP —covering diverse topics related to diabetes. The event also included a nutrition talk by Ms. Ramsha Siddiqui, Nutritionist, and an assessment camp offering screenings and rewards for interactive learning.
Shiekh Saeed Memorial Campus
- Empowering Expectant Mothers:
An awareness session for pregnant women took place on November 28, 2023, at Shaikh Saeed Memorial Center, IHHN. Led by Dr. Ayesha Sarfaraz, the session delved into diabetes in pregnancy, supported by Miss Rehana’s nutritional insights. The interactive Q&A not only showcased attendee enthusiasm but also distributed glucometers as tangible rewards, empowering pregnant women to self-monitoring in healthcare.
The Indus Hospital, Fakir Trust Campus, PIB Colony & IHHN-Martin Dow Community Health Centre, Baba Island:
- Diabetes Awareness Session:
On November 20, 2023, a comprehensive diabetes awareness initiative expanded to IHHN campuses, including PIB and Baba Island, showcasing healthcare professionals’ commitment beyond traditional settings. Dr. Tania Najeeb and Dr. Dileep Kumar conducted diabetes awareness sessions at Baba Island addressing clinical and holistic aspects, while at PIB Colony Campus, Dr. Ayesha Sarfaraz and Dr. Naushaba Sheikh emphasized the importance of lifestyle modifications in diabetes prevention and management.
Al Ghazi Trust Campus, Bhong, Rahim Yar Khan:
- Diabetes Awareness Walk:
On November 14, 2023, World Diabetes Day at Al-Ghazi Trust Hospital, Bhong, became a vibrant celebration aligned with IHHN’s vision. The day started with a dynamic diabetes awareness walk guided by Dr. Aijaz Tariq, Senior registrar, followed by Diabetes Awareness Session by Dr. Laiba, Medical Officer, who educated patients on the basics of diabetes management. Diabetes Educator, Ms. Shakila Sardar, provided personalized guidance, and the hospital’s dedicated counter offered tailored services, including medication guidance, diet plans, and steps for blood sugar control. Mr. Abdul Qayyoum, the Field Supervisor, played a pivotal role in this seamless coordination, representing the hospital’s commitment to enhancing patient experiences and fostering empowerment in health management.
