Mr. Fayyaz Mohammad is a 67 year old mechanical foreman who retired from Pakistan Steel Mills. He receives a pension of Rs. 1500 per month, and lives with his family in Korangi. He had urinary symptoms for which he was seen in the filter clinic at The Indus Hospital and referred to the Urology Clinic. After initial assessment and investigations, he was admitted to The Indus Hospital for a flexible cystoscopy as a day case on Friday, August 24, 2007. Cystoscopy was carried out which showed him to have a possible communication between his intestines and urinary bladder – probably a complication of a previous abdominal surgery. He was discharged 2 hours after the procedure, and will be followed up in the outpatient clinic for further work up before definitive surgery is undertaken here, Insha'Allah.Pictures before, during and after the procedure are attached. Alhamdolillah, this marks the first inpatient admission and procedure at The Indus Hospital – a memorable day indeed.

Noor Bibi is a 74 year female who sustained a fracture of the left hip over one year ago. This was operated at another hospital where a good surgical fixation of the fracture with a DHS plate was carried out. Unfortunately due to unknown reasons, the main screw holding the fracture broke soon after surgery, before the fracture could heal. One end of the broken screw was removed but the main part remained inside her hip - this did not allow her to walk as well as prevented the fracture from healing. When she was first seen at The Indus Hospital, she had not walked for around one year. She was in constant pain and required urgent assistance. After reviewing her case, the orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Mohammad Amin Chinoy and Dr.Mansoor Ali Khan planned a total hip replacement on her. This is a complicated and very expensive procedure, made more difficult due to the presence of the broken metal screw in her hip joint. The procedure was performed on December 5, 2007, and two days later Noor Bibi was walking with the help of a walker (picture). A week later she was back home, pain free and able to walk. All costs of surgery as well as the Charnley Hip Replacement Implant (UK) were borne by The Indus Hospital.

8 year old Areesha came to the Paediatric Surgery clinic at The Indus Hospital in February 2008 from Hyderabad. She had a history of being unable to swallow any kind of liquids or solids since birth. Immediately after attempting to eat or drink, she would regurgitate everything out. She had been diagnosed to have achalasia cardia (narrowing of the lower end of the oesophagus) as an infant but surgery had been deferred by doctors. She had a nasogastric tube in place, through which she had been receiving pureed foods all her life.
After confirming her diagnosis with a barium swallow, she was scheduled for surgery at The Indus Hospital on February 24, 2008. Dr. Mohsin Ali (senior paediatric surgeon) and Dr. Saeeda Haider (senior anaesthetist) donated their time to help perform this surgery with Dr. Lubna Samad and Dr. Akhtar Aziz (full time paediatric surgeon and anaesthetist at The Indus Hospital). A Heller myotomy was performed successfully. On the third postoperative day, Areesha drank water for the first time without vomiting it out! Her joy had to be seen to be believed. She is now back home, eating and drinking like a normal child.
