patient's storY

Noor Bibi is a 74 year female who sustained a fracture of the left hip over one year ago. This was operated at another hospital where a good surgical fixation of the fracture with a DHS plate was carried out. Unfortunately due to unknown reasons, the main screw holding the fracture broke soon after surgery, before the fracture could heal. One end of the broken screw was removed but the main part remained inside her hip - this did not allow her to walk as well as prevented the fracture from healing. When she was first seen at The Indus Hospital, she had not walked for around one year. She was in constant pain and required urgent assistance. After reviewing her case, the orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Mohammad Amin Chinoy and Dr.Mansoor Ali Khan planned a total hip replacement on her. This is a complicated and very expensive procedure, made more difficult due to the presence of the broken metal screw in her hip joint. The procedure was performed on December 5, 2007, and two days later Noor Bibi was walking with the help of a walker (picture). A week later she was back home, pain free and able to walk.  All costs of surgery as well as the Charnley Hip Replacement Implant (UK) were borne by The Indus Hospital.
