World TB Day and Indus Hospital

The Indus hospital marked the world TB day by holding a TB day event on the 23rd of March 2010 at the filter clinic in the hospital premises.
The idea of the event was two folds, one was to create awareness about the disease and its prevention and two was to honor the Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) TB patients, registered with the Indus Hospital TB Programme to encourage them to continue their ongoing treatments by presenting cured patients as role models.
A total of 278 people attended the event. Hospital CEO and renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, Mr. Khalid Khanani member of the board of directors, Dr. Aamir Executive Director IRD, Dr. Naseem Salahuddin Director Infectious Disease at Indus Hospital, Dr. Mateen from Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi and Mr. Tariq Qaiser chief architect of the indus hospital expansion plan, along with 105 MDR TB patients were amongst the attendees. Renowned television artist Miss Zeba Bakhtiar also graced the occasion with her presence.
Dr. Bari, Dr. Amir and Dr. Naseem and Miss Zeba Bakhtiar addressed the audience with words of encouragement and motivation. Cured patients and treatment supporters were also invited onstage to share their experiences.
The event ended with a tour of the new TB OPD Clinic of the Indus Hospital and lunch.
1st Indus Hospital Hand Surgery Workshop report

By the grace of Allah the Indus Hospital organized Hand Surgery Workshop on February 14, 2010. Professor Tahseen Ahmad Cheema, Head of Hand Surgery Division, University of New Mexico Albuquerque graced the occasion as Visiting Professor at the Indus Hospital.
The other faculty members and organizers of the workshop included Professor Muhammad Umar ( IOS ), Dr. Shehab Afzal Beg ( LNH ), Dr. Shehab Ghani ( LNH ), Dr. Haroon ur Rashid ( AKUH ), Dr. Mazhar Nizam ( Patel Hosp. ), Dr. Syed Kamran Ahmed, Dr. Sadaf Saeed, Prof. M. Amin Chinoy, Dr. Mansoor Ali Khan and Dr. Arshad Jamil ( Indus Hosp. )
The workshop was well participated with almost 80 people including over 50 registered participants. This included residents and faculty members from all orthopaedic and plastic surgery institutes of the city of Karachi as well as from Jamshoro and Peshawar.
The lectures included Wrist injuries, evaluation ( Dr. Haroon ur Rashid ), Syndactyly and its sequel ( Dr. Shehab Afzal Beg ), Burnt Hand ( Dr. Mazhar Nizam ), Distal radioulnar joint arthroplasty in rheumatoid patients ( Dr. S. Kamran Ahmed ), Flexor tendon injuries, management and rehabilitation ( Dr. Shehab Ghani ), Visiting Professor Lecture “ Evolution of Human thumb and its reconstruction in congenital and traumatic loss” ( Prof. Tahseen Ahmad Cheema ), Brachial plexus injuries, evaluation and management ( Prof. Tahseen Ahmad Cheema )
Two hand surgeries were performed and telecasted live for the participants in the seminar hall. The first case was a radial club hand and centralization was done. The second case was Apert’s acrosyndactyly which underwent release of 1st web and dorsal rotation flap.
A number of complex hand problems were also discussed in the case discussion hour.
Prof. Cheema remained with the Indus Hospital on February 15th as well and performed outpatient clinic and two more surgeries apart from other clinical acticities.
The feedback has been encouraging and InshaAllah such academic activities shall be conducted at the Indus Hospital in the future as well.

INDUS HOSPITAL LABORATORIES AWARDED ISO 9001; 2008 CERTIFICATION

ALL EYES ON THE INDUS HOSPITAL

In November 2009, the Indus hospital expanded its list of services provided by including one more discipline under its wing -- The hospital opened the doors of a brand new eye clinic for the public.
The Indus hospital eye clinic has been established with the help of the “Care and Kindness Society” (CKS) of Karachi, Pakistan. CKS is a non profit organization based in the Jinnah hospital eye ward, working to provide free medical treatment to patients with eye diseases since 2002.
The OPD clinics are conduted twice a day every day except for Saturdays when patients are seen only during the frist half of the day and Sundays when all scheduled procedures are done. Inpatient services are not provided as yet, however day care facility at the Indus Hospital is engaged for patients that undergo surgical procedures.
Approximately 50 patients with all sorts of eye disease are seen in the OPDs every day while approximately 10 patients undergo surgeries for both Phaco and ECCE cataracts every Sunday; all completely free of cost.
The Indus Hospital eye clinic is fully equipped with all sorts of required machinery such as lensometer, autoreftrector, ophthalmoscope retro scope etc.
CPSP recognizes The Indus Hospital as Post-Graduate Training Institute

The College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has recognized The Indus Hospital as Post-Graduate Training Institute and has given full accreditation for FCPS training in the following disciplines with effect from August 10, 2009.
-Anaesthesiology
-General Surgery
-Infectious Diseases
-Nephrology
-Orthopaedics
-Urology
The hospital has now announced recruitment in its Residency & Fellowship Programmes, the details of which can be viewed by clicking here. The training programme has been designed in strict concordance with CPSP guidelines with great emphasis placed on adequate and regular monitoring of academic activities by the PGME office. A system of bilateral assessment of supervisors and trainees is being developed which will help the programme evolve and improve over time. In addition to benefit to the trainees, a high quality training programme will have a positive impact on patient care at the Indus Hospital.
